Right after Kevin got home from work Chase wanted to open his presents. Good thing we got him something.
Chase got to pick where he wanted to eat dinner so he chose his favorite which is spicy cheese and chips. AKA southwestern cuisine and in this case Moe's. After dinner Chase got to relive his school cupcakes and blow out candles.
It was a pretty laid back birthday but we really enjoyed getting to celebrate with out big 6 year old. We are so proud of how he is growing up! The next day Chase got to celebrate again when his Grammie and Papaw came down to visit for his birthday. Now that I think about it he got to celebrate not only once but four times because he got to celebrate with his Grandma a couple of weeks earlier. Wow, to be young again!
This year Chase chose to have a spy party. I was actually really excited about this theme because it sounded really cool and (once I got my act together) it was really easy to plan. When the kids came in the door they had to go through the basics of spy orientation which started with fingerprints.
After each kid was fingerprinted they had to come up with a spy code name. Chase chose to be Wolverine.
Once they had their names they each got their spy cover up which included a mustache.
Now that they were fingerprinted, named, and had their cover, they each received their agency name badges made by my dear friend Jennifer.
Now they were ready for their first training mission....
Their first envelope had a letter inside titled Nighttime spy training and read, "In order to be a good spy you must be undetectable. Using only the tools I have provided you must learn how to navigate the night. Complete this course and you will be one step closer to becoming a real spy". Each kid received a small flashlight and glow necklace and were lead upstairs where Kevin had blacked out all the windows making the entire upstairs pitch black.
Kevin created an obstacle course using string with bells attached and balloons all over the ground. They had to make it through the obstacle without touching any balloons or ringing any bells with only the light of their flashlights. The kids had a ton of fun navigating the course and once each had gone through a couple of times they received their next mission. It read, "Now that you have mastered the night you must prove your ability to protect. Each spy must seek out one bomb and bring it back here. Once everyone has found a bomb you must diffuse them".
The kids ran around using only the light of their flashlights and each found one "bomb". The bombs were their party favors and included all their spy gear. They each received a notebook, a compass, spy glasses, magnify glass, binoculars, and flashlight. Now that the kids had all their gear they were ready to be real spies. We sent them downstairs so Chase could open his presents.
Once they arrived downstairs the presents were missing and in their place was another envelope. It contained a message. "Dr. Evil has taken the birthday boys presents, follow the clues along the way if you want to see them again. Clue 1: Even a spy gets a bit hungry so lets get a treat. The trick is you can only use your mouth to grab one to eat". This led the kids to bobbing for apples.
Once each kid had gotten an apple and had a chance to eat it, they received their next clue. "Luckily you have passed your bomb training course. Now it's time to test your skills. This time though the mission is to see it explode". This led the kids to the piñata.
Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of them hitting the piñata but they had a blast making it explode. Once they had picked up all the candy they received their last clue. "Scrub a dub dub. Your on your own from here on out. Keep your head down and you'll figure it out. Run and search for you last clue. Once you see it you'll know what to do". We had cut out black foot prints that the kids saw and followed up the stairs and into our bathroom where they found the missing presents.
The kids were so proud of their spy/detective skills and had so much fun! After our spies refueled with a little lunch Chase had one more bomb to diffuse...
Chase had so much fun celebrating his birthday with his friends!

What a fun idea! I love all the spy touches from the badges to the obstacles to the bomb pinata. So so cool!
I'm not sure we can ever let Connor celebrate with you all... we'll never be able to live up to parties Uncle Kevin and Aunt Jenny throw! :) Looks like everybody had a great time.
