Snow Monsters

Chase has been wanting to make a snowman since we moved up here but the snow has been too powdery to pack. Finally last weekend Kevin and Chase successfully built a snow man...

Errr, I mean snow monster. Chase was so proud of their creation. They worked really hard and then the monster tried to attack Chase...

Or from Chase's expression, tried to make him laugh. I am so glad that he finally got to make a snow creature!

Happy paczki day

I Love how culturally rich the Detroit area is. One of my new favorite "holiday's" is paczki day. What is that you ask? A paczki is a super delicious jelly or custard filled doughnut.

YUMMY! Historically, Paczki day or Fat Tuesday was an opportunity for Polish Catholics to eat all the sugar, eggs and lard in their house before Lent. Whether Catholic or not, however, Detroiters know a good holiday when they taste it and this is one of those days when I am happy to currently be a Detroiter! I will not reveal how many I ate but lets just say they were unbelievably yummy. I will miss them next year!

Winter downfalls

Somewhere deep, deep, deep down inside of me I really like the Michigan winter. There is something that just feels right about there being snow on the ground during winter. I love how beautiful it looks falling from the sky and how bright it makes even the darkest night. I love how my hot coffee seems to taste even better in the bitter cold. I love how excited my children get about the snow and the pure joy they have playing in it and sledding.

However where there are ups there are always downs. With the snows comes bitter cold. The cold I can handle but often times it is accompanied with 10-30 mph winds that cut through you. With snow comes extra bundling up, which takes 10-20 minutes longer to get out the door. Those of you with kids already know how long it takes to get out the door. Then there is the muddy wet clothes which means more laundry, and muddy messes inside the house and inside the car. That brings me to the point of this blog post, the reason we could never live in the north permanently.

Kevin can't stand it! It is impossible to keep a car clean and they are not just the normal dirty, they are disgusting. So last week in the snow Kevin took maters into his own hands.

Ahhhh.... clean.

Yes that is a sheet of ice on the cars and yes he is crazy but man they look so much better, don't they (at least for the next 8-10 hours that they sit in the garage)?!?

Happy Birthday

I'm sorry to all the Ladies out there but I have the most wonderful, loving, handsome husband in the entire world and last Tuesday was his birthday. Knowing I could never top his birthday from last year, skiing in the Austrian Alps, we had a pretty low key birthday celebration with his favorite mexican meal (tacos), presents, and birthday cake. The kids were over excited about Kevin's birthday...

I think they got to open more presents than Kevin did....

I decided to make Kevin a chocolate cake since he said he was craving chocolate. The cake was supper yummy but my decorating still needs some work...

We had a wonderful time celebrating as a family a man that deserves much more than we could ever give him. Fast forward to today (Sunday) and we left the kids with a babysitter and headed with some friends to Mexicantown for some authentic Mexican food. Nothing says "I love you" like taking your loved one downtown into the ghetto for his birthday, right? The drive to the restaurant was a little sketchy, I would have taken pictures but I didn't want to get shot. Once we pulled in the parking lot the restaurant was gated with its own security truck driving around the parking lot, so we felt pretty safe.

The food was so yummy, and we were so hungry, I neglected to take pictures before we started to eat.

Our fellow adventurers...

One of the me and the birthday boy...

After lunch we headed into the heart of Mexicantown and found a great coffee shop, Cafe con Leche, and the Mexicantown bakery for some yummy treats.

We didn't go to the Mexicantown lounge that is in the next picture but I wanted a picture of a sign that said Mexicantown so you all would know that I wasn't just making up the name of this area.

We had a great time eating some yummy mexican food and enjoyed a taste of a different culture. Happy Birthday Kevin!

Winter Wonderland and wipeouts

We are so excited to be getting more snow! We got a couple of inches over night so we decided to take the kids sledding today. I have to say it is so much more fun to go sledding with the kids when Kevin is home!

Leah is about the toughest, bravest 2 year old I know. The girl has NO fear...

Even though she completely wiped out she jumped right back up and was ready for more.

After a couple of times down she realized the saucer was faster so the baby sled was retired.

There was a girl who kindly let the kids borrow her sleds, so they decided to go down together.

Every time down they asked for more. Kevin and I however got the most exercise getting the kids back up the hill. I have to confess, I really love sledding and nothing beats the ear to ear smiles of the kids at the bottom of the hill.
